Round 4 - São Paulo
"The Spectacle on the Streets" - Giu Canbera
THE ITAIPAVA INDYSP300 - BRAZIL
My name is Giu Canbera and I'm the IndycarUK's special envoy for Brazil to closely follow and review the race!
I am from Sao Paulo. I live here in the state since I was born, then ends up being cheaper than a trip from an England guy to Brazil and... well... where were we? Ahhh yes...

THURSDAY IN THE GARAGE
For the first time I decided to venture into the garages on Thursday. I went with a friend and arrived very early. We managed to get inside the area amicably without credentials.
A very nice structure, full of lights, mechanics and cars being built. We take lots of photos with drivers, spoke in Portuguese to Ed Carpenter. I enjoyed these things.
But at some point I found myself thinking about something. On many of the Indycar forums that you read, you see 90% of people complaining about the new car. But I saw them up close. Very close ... I touched one of them. And I can say with conviction that the DW12 DOES NOT LOOKS UGLY AT ALL, THEY DONT! That’s Impossible to say. The car is gorgeous close up. Great job Dallara, Dan, Indycar, Randy .. CONGRATS!

Suddenly those thoughts gone when we saw Graham at RLL's garage. As we approached to ask for a photo, we just saw Bobby Rahal. I confess. I just got FREEZED. C'mon.. it’s Bobby Rahal! He is a legend! All I could say was "YOU ARE THE MAN!"
He was super and replied with something like ''Me? No!! You are!''
I think I saw Mike Hull around, but not 100% sure it was really him. We took pictures with Simona and Bia, Davey Hamilton, EJ Viso and Will Power.
Then we got to Sam Schmidt's garage and talked to Simon Pagenaud and Tristan Vautier. They were the coolest guys around and talked a lot with us.
They talked about Gil de Ferran and some Brazilian soccer team hehe.
By far the most receptive guys. Oh... And Justin Wilson was there too. He’s tall. IMMENSE. Really cool guy also. His face looks a lot like that raptor from the Jurassic Park movie BTW... seriously

SATURDAY - Practice and Qualifying
I arrived early on Saturday to follow every practice and support series. (GT Brazil and the Mercedes Challenge)
As usual, Saturday is usually cooler because you can see cars for the first time and get amazed looking at the liveries and sponsors.
I always try to find if I know the names of every car as they pass running above 120mph,
The cool thing is that is my second year watching these cars, and I could really notice a difference in engine sounds. The Chevy sound more serious (bass / don’t know the word)
Then Honda, which as they pass, give the impression of having a little whistle and sharp at the background.
It’s interesting how you get used to it and can identify them when listening from afar, while passing through the rear part of the stands, in the famously and congested Straight Tiete's River Avenue. The straight with 0.8 miles long, longer than the Richmond Oval and almost the same size as the oval in Iowa!!
(FYI: the sound of the Lotus engines back IN 2012 reminds me a 70's Volkswagen in the bad way. Terrible noisy. Goodbye and Thank you)
Practice and Qualifying were confused... many adventures, some hits on the tyres or walls...
Will Power started threatening as always dominating everything. He is the best damn driver for road/street courses. Always using almost nothing in down force,
Gaining time on the long straights and for the corner, "holding the car on the arm" (a Brazilian expression) showing that he is actually very capable at it.
Result more than obvious ...NOT! During the of groups, several problems like hitting tyres and wall by Tristan (Identical to the Pagenaud in Practice1)
Eventually yielding a red flag... and everyone got screwed on GROUP 1. I remember telling the rookie Tristan on Thursday to take care at that corner. I swear I did. (TOP6 Marco, Takuma, Dario, Tony, E.J. and Dixon)
The same was true for the GROUP 2, with mechanical problems for James Jakes another red flag came up. It was all luck... Drivers do not actually get a chance to try a quick lap. Freak results, but left everything very interesting. (TOP 6 Hinch, J.R., Simona, Justin, Bourdais and RHR)
The crowd cheered went CRAZY when Tony got P1 in Fast 12...Nice moment for us! For Real! Tony is a loved guy around here!
But after that, the current Champion Ryan Hunter-Reay takes the pole without a hard work. With about three minutes to go he took the best time and nobody was able to take it off him.
Viso surprised me with that speed (FYI he's a very short small guy ... kind ... 1.30m) at the end of practice. Tony and Dario seemed to try.
Dixon and Hinch seemed only fill the group from my point of view, of course. Not risking too much to improve lap times.
Ohhh After the Qualifying, Hinch's worth the comment saying the crowd roared for him at the Qualifying. He said he thought he was very popular around here.
But then someone explained "hey...you were right behind TK's car at Qualifying. All that cheer was for him! Not you! LOL moment 2!

SUN AND MY GIRLFRIEND
"Damn sun! Oh how I hate you! Where is the rain?? Please rain now"!! (That is what I was thinking all day long. For Real. Damn U sun! Too hot)
"Damn u girlfriend!" I take Indycar too seriously so I have to hate her. She just won a $5 bet on who would be the pole for the race. (Just For the record ... I bet $5 for Will Power ... and I'm the one who lost and paid her $5)
But She also noticed something very interesting. At the time for the cars break to make a turn, the Chevy cars make a sound just like a ship from the future. And Honda makes "explosion sounds".
I already have heard the two types back in 2012, but never realised that each one had its characteristic sound.
Try to pay attention to it if someone of u guys attends for a race track! I think the reason for that is because Chevy use twin turbo engines and Honda uses single turbo. Not sure about that too. But who cares? I like racing, not Technicalities.

BRAZILIAN TV TRANSMISSIONS
I know... I know... But that wasn’t the Kanaan TV channel! It’s the 4th year in a row and seems that these guys do not learn a thing of how to do a Broadcast. For Christ sake BANDtv! It’s OK that itaipava was the sponsor of the event, but the series have 24 other cars that needed to be shown. For real.
I do not want to dwell on it 'cause we're lucky to have a full time broadcast on non cable channel for the National GP.
But please... make it better next year.
(I saw the NBCSN's rerun and it was so much better. Showing lot of action on the race, not just Kanaan's car and sometimes Bia and Helio)

RUMOURS AROUND
Rumours that BANDtv is working together with sponsors to put Bruno Senna at a Ganassi car for 2014 After ensuring the Sao Paulo's race contract with Indy until 2019. The problem is that Brazilian fans just go for the races to see Brazilians driver. Tony and Helio are getting old. They may not last too much longer.
Another thing that we were told was the possibility of negotiating for a second race in Brazil. In the capital of the country. Brasilia. I don't think that is going to happen. But we'll have to wait and see. Some track layout re-design is about to start at the “Autodromo Internacional Nelson Piquet".
Last thing is a weird tweet from Cristiano da Matta to @MotoM4TT saying that he will race at some Road/Street courses next year.
Let’s keep our eyes at track forum for more news hehe

CHEERS FOR THE ORGANISATION!
It’s my fourth year straight watching the race on the track and again I had no complaints about anything when it comes into the organization of the event. Unless the weather.
The last 2 years was the Sun... DAMN SUN... I hate you! And the heavily rain from 2011. But this is not on the organisation, right?
From the subway station to the race track, good signage, policing, medical... prices compatible as far as possible, many screens for people at the stands.
Everything was excellent. Something really rare to see here I must say,
(I make it clear that is just MY opinion ... There were people complaining about something, but...whatever)

THE RACE
(Live updates during the actual race)
Here we go here live from Sao Paulo Streets for the 4th race of the year!
Clean start so far... All cars with low down force. You can see the wings! SP300 is like Monza.
You need to have a fast car for the long Straights and a good car for the Infield part. Too hard to adjust ehh?
Cool! Lots of passing and Bumps (I like those rear bumpers. They allow the cars to race hard and do not break easily)
Good race until Lap 7! Ohh noo That Bia! Mechanical problems! That’s sad, man!
Several cars have stopped in the pits leaving for three pit strategy I think! Yes... They just said it now here.
Restart on Lap 10 and Tony made everyone went crazy by passing Dario and RHR at the same lap! NICE MOVES TONY!
The Crowd screaming 'TONY'. This is great! I don’t like soccer but it should be something like that! Haha
Excellent race on the middle-field as usual. TV broadcast should pay more attention on that part of the race. For EVERY race.
Will Power starts P24 and passes 11 cars in 16 laps! (With a Pit Stop already)... however on lap 19 his name began to going down at the classification notes.
It looks mechanicals too. Ohh he's right in front of the crowd now very slow... Wait. he's coming out of the car! Ohh man there’s fire on the car!
Poor Aussie! He’s my favourite driver in Indycar. Here comes the Full Course Caution again!
Almost every car is on the pits right now. Let’s see. Ohh Cool! Bourdais got the lead from now! ChampCar feelings!
I believe that since Mexico 2007 hasn’t led a race. I could be wrong, sorry!
Restart on lap 24, first turn... cars running well ohhh noo Jakes, Graham and Carpenter on the wall
Haha Let me tell u AGAIN I about how strong the DW12 is! Jakes filled the tyre barrier and he will continue the race! Awesome
Restart on lap 27... Lots of bumps... and OHH there’s a car spinning'.
Oh no! That Helio!! That’s Sad, man! Helio got hit by Pagenaud from behind and spun out. But he got it back together.
Lap 30 and Newgarden has made 23 overtakes so far! Impressive.
Lap 34 Takuma passes RHR! Exciting move, but Ryan does not push it to hard for a fight on the track right now.
Despite the victory at Long Beach, Takuma Sato is Takuma Sato... You GOTTA FEAR HIM!
Bourdais to the pits. Bad strategy... ohh another Yellow Flag! Debris on track!
Graham Rahal crashes into turn 2. He hits the tyre barrier.
Tagliani asked before the race to retreat a little beat the tyre barrier, but they not attended his require.
Sato on the pits! Good move by Foyt Team! Let’s see.
Restart on lap 39... Lots of respect at the front of the grid. Bleh... Oh Graham stalls on the track! Haha Well done DW12!! Well done!
Here’s Marco over Oriol!! Side by Side.... Exciting! They almost touch... ohhhh BEER!! Excuse me for a while! Let me have a beer.
It’s too damn hot today! I HATE THE SUN! GO AWAY!
And another yellow came out. I didn’t see very well what happened. It looks a problem between Helio, Bourdais, and Pagenaud. Hildebrand and Kimball got no place to go!
Helio! Again in trouble! That’s sad, man! What a day. His car is destroyed! They will change almost everything on it. But guess what? He's back! Nice work Dallara!
Restart on lap 45...very smoothly. Lots of action on the middle-field again. And here comes Tony to take the lead again!! Nice!! Crowd went insane again!! Hoooooraaaay!
Andretti passes Dario and is getting close to RHR. Oriol on Dario also. Oh man what a race!
I think RHR had a flat tyre! Marco is closing on Tony... He passes, Oriol is closing on Tony too. Oh man please don’t say there’s a probl... OH NOOOO
Tony is sooo slow right in front of us. That’s sad, man. He's crying on the car! Ohh noo... Why God!? Please give him a win at the Indy 500. He deserves it! We all know that!
Lap 51 Yellow Flag. The saddest one so far.
Lots of cars on the pits. No clashes today.
Restart - 22 to go.
Hildebrand is on the lead now. Cool to see, but he will need to make another pit for sure.
And there’s Graham's car at P2 but he’s like... 4 laps down. I hate this. Rulebook need changes
Here it goes.. clean start. Marco is trying to pass Hinch... Graham is trying to pass J.R. ?? C’mon Graham!!
Things are getting' HOT when suddenly... ANOTHER YELLOW!
That’s Justin Wilson on the Tyre barrier.
Some Debris on track by Jakes's car touching the walls on turn 1/2. Just when he came in a good position!
Restart... 17 to go!
Josef passes Hinch at the Start! Oh man Josef came from P25! What a race.
Pagenaud is good at the race too with 6 pits, coming from P23 plus a Drive thru Penalty
Fuels strategies starts to work right now with the cars hitting' 193mph (310kmh) on the long straight.
The racing was steady until 13 to go. Hinch ventured without success on Pagenaud.
On board cameras shows Pagenaud's car bumpers swaying and threatening to fall
Please no more yellows!
Josef turned the fastest laps behind Sato.
He's taking the difference without using p2p pushes! That could be a good move. Hinch is very fast on track right now.
9 to go - Hinch passes Pagenaud on the outside!! Beautiful moment! Wow
8 to go - Josef is getting closer! He got 3 P2P pushes and Takuma has 2 P2P
7 to go - JOSEF TRIES TO OVERTAKE on the First straight!... ohhhh that exciting 2 x P2P pushes!! Oohhh Sato locks up at the end harpin
6 to go - Hinch approaches Josef and Sato show some tyre degradation!
5 to go - Oh man no one cares anymore about the rest of the field. This is getting fantastic.
Josef attempts from all sides! WOOOW Sato Defends and it was really weird ehh
4 to go - ohh jeez my heart is about to explode! Haha People on the stands don’t even look anymore to the track
All eyes on the screens to see the full race action!!
Ohhhh Hinch suddenly approaches and passes Josef in harpin! Damn! I was cheering for Him to win!!
3 to go - There is speculation about a punishment for Sato for the Blocking move on Newgarden
Ohhh here it comeees! Hinch and Sato using P2P. Here it goes, here it goes...OHHHHH ANOTHER WEIRD defending move from Sato
OMG!! I’m going to die!
2 to go - I CANT BELIVE THIS. IM WATHICNG Marco On Josef now! He's got a last P2P push I think! I’m so... ohh!!

LAST LAP - Marco passes easily Josef now. Ooh noo I want to see him at the podium!
Coming down the stretch.. Last chance!! Hinch uses p2p!!! OH NOOOO!! SATO MADE ANOTHER DAMN BLOCKIN' MOVE!!!

IM DONE! WANNA GO HOME NOW!
I'm seriously thinking about QUIT Indycar. I’m gonna have a heart attack someday!
I have nothing more to say. Indycar is the best racing series in the world and today we saw a historical race around Sao Paulo's streets.
The best of the year so far without a doubt. Probably one of the best of all time on road / street courses
Some WEC fans will suggest that the yellow flags "served as the DRS and Kers for this race", but it’s okay hehe
The race was fun to watch. No one can say the opposite. It even seemed as an oval race because of all the passing and emotions!
Thanks IndycarUK and Adrian for this! Hope u guys have a chance to see the nowadays Indycar someday. it’s AWESOME!
...well ... that's it.
Now it’s time for THE Indy500 *___*
.... See ya
